Joining Forces to Feed Children

As of June 1, two San Miguel de Allende charities have joined forces to feed more hungry school children. Amistad Canada and Feed the Hungry SMA have entered into a partnership that will result in at least 200 students receiving a nutritious (and tasty) daily hot meal.

“No child in San Miguel shall know the pain of hunger” has been the goal of Feed the Hungry SMA for more than 30 years. The organization has evolved from one small, humble kitchen at St. Paul’s Anglican Church to providing daily meals to more than 4,000 children in 34 of San Miguel’s poorest communities. (It also delivers ingredients for the daily meals of some 500 orphans, children with disabilities, and senior citizens who are served by six other San Miguel charities.)

Amistad Canada is a registered Canadian charity that distributes tax-deductible donations to seven San Miguel-based nongovernmental organizations. As well as issuing Canadian tax receipts, it conducts regular financial and performance audits of the NGOs to ensure donations are used for their intended purpose.

The new Amistad Canada Kitchen Angels’ Project is funding two additional kitchens serving another 1,000 meals a week. Thanks to a generous seed donation by two “Amistad Angels,” children in the communities of Los González and Puerta de Sosa are enjoying daily lunches.

Torontonians, Marc Egnal and Judith Humphrey, have been visiting San Miguel for more than a dozen years. Marc became involved with FTH as one of the team of volunteers who spend Saturday mornings packing various foodstuffs for distribution to the rural kitchens.

Judith and Marc note that “feeding children in these poor communities is important, gratifying work. We were also very impressed by a trip where we saw one of the kitchens in operation. The sight of so many children, washing their hands, then lining up for a hot meal, finishing their food, and coming back for more was most moving. Their smiles and laughter made us realize that we wanted to support them and their future.”

So, on top of volunteering, Marc and Judith have offered a generous donation to establish the two new kitchens: “We’re delighted to support Amistad Angels and hope many others will take part in this program.”

Amistad Canada officially received Marc and Judith’s donation at its annual general meeting in Toronto on June 13.
