Banana Land: Blood, Bullets, Poison

Banana Land

By David Johanssen

Bananas are by far the most popular fruit in the United States, but consumers would be shocked if they knew how they have been produced since the industry began in 1899 with the formation of the United Fruit Company. As a monolithic corporation and monopoly, the UFC has enjoyed the protection and support of lawmakers in many countries, while also collaborating with repressive regimes throughout Central America, often resulting in significant bloodshed.

Join us for a documentary and discussion on Wednesday, August 16, at 5pm as we present Banana Land: Blood, Bullets, Poison. Find out the nefarious truth about the banana industry. Banana Land provides a fascinating and startling peek into a billion-dollar business marked by scheming and sacrifice.

On Friday, August 11, at 5pm, we present the award winning indie film: Captain Fantastic. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, isolated from society, a devoted father (Viggo Mortensen), disillusioned with today’s America, dedicates his life to transforming his six young children into extraordinary adults. The Philadelphia Enquirer raves, “It’s a rare movie that asks such big questions—about parenting, about family, about modern-day America—and comes up with answers that are moving and meaningful, that make you laugh and cry.”

On Friday, August 18 at 5pm: Embrace of the Serpent. This Sundance award winning film features the encounter, apparent betrayal, and finally life-affirming friendship between an Amazonian shaman (the last survivor of his people) and two foreign scientists. The Minneapolis Star Tribune asserts, “The film moves into psychedelic and violent territory, creating a perspective that is equally unreal and unforgettable. It is gripping, challenging, engrossing from beginning to end!”
