The following translated text is an excerpt from a recent article in a national newspaper, La Jornada, entitled “Ángel Pahuamba, Witness of Our Time,” written by Gaspar Aguilera Diaz:

“While observing the work of Ángel Pahuamba one discovers, not only the important aspects which make up a figurative composition, the brilliant chromatist, and the specific references to a specific time and theme, but also the magic, luminosity, and the textures which overflow in most of his paintings and through his characters in a uniquely playful vision.

“Other important elements are the stories or references which make up the ethical character of its content. This work contains a very strong and admirable testimonial character, which portrays political, social, and cultural events of great importance both to the state and to the whole country. There is also a reconstruction of fascinating characters which appear as in a magic theater, some of which have their roots in popular traditions as well as those which come from the artist’s childhood.

“The spectator finds himself facing a powerful expressive and communicative force, which, contrary to what one may expect, does not clash with the abstract elements that the work contains. When one admires Ángel Pahuamba’s fauna, one recalls the figures of the animals created and imagined by Francisco Toledo, or some geometric figures utilized by Vicente Rojo. This journey through a wounded history and geography (but full of dignity and never broken), through the capable and sensitive pictorial recourses which Pahuamba uses, leaves the viewer not only in a state of surprise but stricken by the total sensitivity in respect to the deep meaning of his work.”
