Ana Quiroz: Introspection

By Margaret Failoni

After carefully studying the unique and unusual work created by Ana Quiroz, we can see the intellectual and precise background from which it springs. The artist comes from a family of physicians and grew up with skeletons and illustrative body parts in her father and grandfather’s studios. But her art history background, theories, and data, which she successfully teaches, come into play as well. There is no doubt we are dealing with an erudite artist. The work in this exhibition mixes some refined associated aesthetics, exploring other means of communication, each displaying identity and value with occasional negative preconceptions therefore underlying subversive potential. The eight works presented question related issues of analysis (“Self Portrait”), decoration, and relationship (“The Sword”). Glass shards are used for the “Self Portrait” brain as well as glasslike resins in the bones. And although we are dealing with strange body parts, the magic in Quiroz’s work is the deftly applied aesthetics in creating works of beauty while containing room for thought. And therein lays the magic of this work.

She has traveled intensely in South America and Europe for intellectual and artistic challenges and has lectured on several occasions. She has taught the plastic arts in the Instituto Allende as well as teaching art history in El Nigromante (Bellas Artes). A generation of exemplary young artists has passed through her classes.

Quiroz has exhibited in various museums in Mexico and South America. Her work can be found in some of the most important collections of contemporary art. The Intersección Gallery is honored and excited to be exhibiting her work.
