“Dazed and Confused”

By Leonardo Díaz

Nicolás Guzmán and René Almanza will be exhibiting for the first time in San Miguel de Allende. In my opinion, this is a great advance in terms of contemporary art exhibitions locally. From what San Miguel now represents, as it has been described as the “Best City in the World to Visit,” the responsibility of this exhibit is from the cultural and creative aspect. With the arrival of plastic artists of the stature of René and Nicolás, I consider that we are even more in tune with the standards of artistic quality of the great cities of the world.

I first met René’s work a few years ago through Juxtapoz magazine and then in his individual exhibition in CDMX, which he named “Landscape.” Since then I have followed his work in different publications and important exhibitions nationally and internationally. His figurative narrative is focused mainly on the human form and the extreme drama that he expresses through his style-stroke—the contained emotion, anger, pain, pleasure, and power. The work that I saw recently from Nicolas had the same aesthetic impact—different from René’s, but the intensity was the same: pop art compositions, film sources, eroticism, chiaroscuro, explosive colors, but always maintaining the balance in its elements and compositions, both in drawing and in painting. The pieces from Nicolás have been exhibited in different important contemporary art spaces in Mexico and abroad.

In San Miguel there will be pieces by both artists in the self-management space Project Showroom as part of that that venue’s residency program. Local production (intensive residency) will end with the “Dazed and Confused” exhibition in the Project Showroom (Privada Aurora 4, Centro) on August 4 at 7pm. The work will be available for sale to promote contemporary local collecting.
