Class starts in his studio with how to begin a painting—composition, value differences to balance the composition, using a viewfinder. Find what interests you most. What knocks you over? Learn to create from what is in front of you rather than just painting what you see.

Once outside, learn to use the viewfinder for composition and make a value study in monochromatic colors with darkest areas first, followed by the lightest value and then 3 or 4 intermediate values. This is an Old Masters’ technique for seeing, composing, and achieving satisfactory results quickly.

Next, Jon teaches color harmony. Warm and cool colors, lights and darks, highlights leading the eye through the painting. Often a student needs to stand right beside an object and touch it to see which colors are actually there. Learn to see colors to forever alter your art.

Painting outside showed Jon how little he knew about color. The warm sun gives cool shadows; cool north light gives warm shadows. A shadow is never one color. These are the skills he teaches in his workshops which will prove invaluable to you.

The next day brings color! Learn to match the values in the study to the color before you so the value of the colors must match the values in the study. A limited palette: white, yellow, red, blue, brown, and green, creates cohesion and color harmony.

Jon, with a BFA in painting and an MFA in drawing, has painted all his life, taught for decades, and paints every day. He is a portrait painter, a landscape painter, and a musician. He has lived in San Miguel for nine years and has a studio at Zacateros 83A.

He also sells The Williams Field Box, a wooden pochade for plein air painting, with a carrying strap, a plexiglas palette, a brush washer and brush holder, a cup for medium, a tripod clip, and space for two painting panels.
