Narciso Cabrera, Maintenance

Narciso Cabrera

Meet La Biblioteca

By Karla Ortiz

Narciso Cabrera Carreón, better known as “Don Narciso,” is the person in charge of the maintenance of this cultural center. In his daily job, Don Narciso strives to keep the building in its best condition so visitors and members can enjoy a good book, a chat among friends, or a cup of coffee in a clean, comfortable place (as do the other Biblioteca employees, who work hard day after day to provide a service to the community.)

In his youth, Don Narciso worked in several places, doing different jobs with different people and different requirements and ways to carry out his work as an electrician, plumber, mechanic, and even gardener. “A little bit of everything,” he says.

Don Narciso heard about a vacancy for the Biblioteca maintenance job on the radio ten years ago, when he was 36 years old. Since then, we have been pleased to greet him every day in the halls of the Biblioteca.

Don Narciso says he is passionate about his job because it is a pleasure for him to repair anything and because there are so many ways to do each task. For him, his job has nothing to do with routine because there is always a new approach to the things he is working on. “Every day is different,” he says.

For Narciso, two of the biggest satisfactions that come daily after entering the Biblioteca are dealing with the challenges that come from looking after an ancient and historic building and discovering new and unexpected challenges because “I like to learn new things.”

His goals to overcome these challenges are to get more training and to continue to learn new things every day in his work—carpentry, electricity, and plumbing—and thereby to provide a better service to the community.

“The Biblioteca is a very beautiful place to work, and I would like young people to come and see what is being offered here, so that they can be part of our community.”
