Back to School for a Break from Hunger

By Donna Fullerton and Bere Parra

Like most kids their age, thousands of children from impoverished communities in San Miguel de Allende look forward to going back to school after the summer recess, not for new clothes, shoes, pencils, or books—but for a hot, nutritious school meal—thanks to Feed the Hungry San Miguel (FTH). For some of these boys and girls, it is their only meal of the day.

FTH now operates 33 school kitchens that provide over 4,000 meals every school day—nearly 900,000 meals per year. So far this year, FTH has already opened new school kitchens in the communities of Los González, Moral de Puerto de Nieto, Puerto de Sosa, and Nuevo Pantoja. All of these new kitchens were made possible by the generous contributions of donors who care about the health and future of Mexico’s children. The new partnership between Amistad Canada and Feed the Hungry resulted in the funding of two of these kitchens, serving 1,000 meals per week.

FTH’s commitment to these communities goes beyond operating school kitchens. Staff nutritionists give workshops for the mothers so that they learn how to cook more balanced meals at home, even on a minimal budget. They also measure the children to track their growth and development. Salaried and volunteer cooks receive recurrent training and oversight from staff supervisors who visit the school kitchens each week. The meals program director and nutritionists also visit each kitchen periodically to assure that the highest hygiene standards are maintained.

Will you help break the cycle of poverty?

When the children return to school in August, please help ensure that we can continue to provide nutritious school meals to the poorest of the poor and break the cycle of poverty through educated children. Just US$20 will feed two children for a month. Imagine what larger donations can accomplish! You can make a difference to a child, a family, a community.
