“The Famous” at Galeria Aldama

By Leslie Sargeant

Artist Mario Oliva was born in Guadalajara City and got his bachelor’s degree in visual arts at the University of Guadalajara. From the age of 5, he always felt a passion and connection with painting. He creates a new language on canvas, through which he freely expresses his ideas and emotions. Mario’s greatest influence was his father, a sociologist, who taught him that the most important influences are not of technique or style, but to express one’s true authentic self. This is what Mario portrays on canvas, a sense of himself.

He moved to San Miguel de Allende in 2006 seeking different perspectives and experiences. After 10 years at the Fábrica La Aurora, Mario has taken his place as a well-known artist in San Miguel. He has also been promoting socio-cultural movements since his first show in San Miguel titled “Pure Naive,” supporting the opening of Centro Infantil San Pablo. Estudio Mario Oliva is currently in the center of Fábrica La Aurora where he produces and shows his artwork, as well as guiding emerging artists through his mixed media lessons.

“The intention of my art work is to generate unexpected emotions, through the use of symbols, contrast between colors, materials, and various techniques. I find that the easiest way to communicate myself with everyone is through art while at the same time better understanding myself. Art is communication.

In my most recent collection, “The Famous People,” that will be showing at Galeria Aldama on Aldama 3 from July 28 to August 31, I plan to make a tribute to the most important part of the communication cycle which is the receptor, because without an audience to whom we can tell our ideas or show our work to, the cycle would be incomplete. On the contrary, the expectancy and critique makes the receptor part of the art work, making the artist the receptor of his own enriched message.”—Mario Oliva.
