Picasso and Dr. Seuss

By Hannah McCurley

Angela Markey, age 6, is from Shanghai, China. Her parents visited San Miguel for the first time while passing through Mexico.

Angela discovered her love for art while taking the Picasso Art Program at Rosewood San Miguel. She learned about Leonardo da Vinci, the great Renaissance painter, and Michelangelo, the world famous sculptor. She has seen the Mona Lisa painting and thinks that it is her eyes that follow you around the room that made the Mona Lisa painting famous. When asked, “Who is the most famous poet in the world?” Angela’s hand shot up in the air.

Her response was, “Dr. Seuss!”

Although Angela was in San Miguel for only a short while, the beautiful memories of this town with its colonial art and culture are sealed for life thanks to the great time she had with the Picasso Art Workshop at Rosewood.

The children learn many techniques and fundamentals in the art class while having fun creating art. They make cartoons; write stories about their favorite characters, and explore nature in the beautiful Rosewood garden. They draw, paint, make sculptures, make puppets, do collage, paint a self-portrait, learn about perspective, and learn about great artists and what to see in a museum.

They work with clay, tin, paper, and real canvas. They work on individual projects or collectively in mural painting. Older children from ten to twelve are in a separate program where they learn design elements, art history, portrait painting, still life, and landscape techniques.
