Smile You Are In San Miguel
By Jade Arroyo

The Poetry Collective of San Miguel returned to present their passionate poetry, honoring their mission statement of social change through poetry. This collective of young people commented, “We have come to provide art in times of darkness and to present the fourth poetic slam in our home at the Bellas Artes.”
Summoning poets, rappers, musicians, and speakers to this fourth collective action, they met at El Nigromante Cultural Center to express social and cultural problems through their writings and free verse.
Mike Vidargas and Chucho Urbina coordinated the event.
Included in the activities was a welcome toast, a shot of mezcal that cleansed their throats before the performance. Angie Rueda Castillo gave a talk to the representatives of the LGBTI community of San Miguel de Allende about the Gay Pride walk on July 1. They drew slogans in support of the next day’s march and summoned the community to unite as supporters of the expression of total rights for everyone.
After the slam, the night ended with a performance by activist and performance artist, La Bala Rodríguez, created by Marianna Garcés Torres. She performed The Imperative, a composition about fatness and disobedience throughout the body. Follow the progress and upcoming events of Colectivo Poético through their Facebook page.
