San Miguel Institute of Bel Canto Announces Public Concert Schedule Two Concerts Will Benefit Casa de Europa en México, SC

By Alexis White

The San Miguel Institute of Bel Canto (SMIBC) announces five public concerts in its third season of providing an intensive program for rising young opera singers with major career potential. Two of the five concerts benefit Casa de Europa en México, SC, which is donating the teaching, master class, and office facilities that make SMIBC 2017 possible. More than 50 international singers auditioned for this year’s program; over 20 have been accepted. They represent China, Puerto Rico, nine Mexican states, and five American states.

The first concert, An Evening of Arias and Song, will give the community an opportunity to hear these accomplished singers after less than five days of classes and coaching. The concerts on July 6 and 8 will give the audience an opportunity to hear them again as the SMIBC program comes to a close. Taught by a faculty that has sung and coached at leading opera houses of the world, the singers often realize a transformative experience at the Institute. As one alumnus recently wrote to SMIBC co-founders and directors Joseph McClain and Michael Sylvester, “All of you moved me to a place where I know I have the knowledge within me to make it happen.”

The Institute provides an organic, holistic program for a manner of singing known as Bel Canto that focuses on natural, pure, and even-tone production throughout the vocal range. This vocal technique is accomplished by developing the voice’s agility and precision. The SMIBC faculty embodies the historic line of Bel Canto training that began in the late 17th century and continues today.

All proceeds from the two benefit concerts presented by Casa de Europa will go to them. Casa de Europa is dedicated to strengthening multicultural ties between Mexico and the European Union and does this through cultural, academic, economic, scientific, and artistic activities, as well as tourism and other programs.
