Studio an Art Camp Combines Art, Culture and Community Service

By Jessica Antonelli

What could be better than a kid’s summer days filled with painting, romping outdoors, building forts out of cardboard, and learning Spanish in Mexico? How about all of the above and knowing that all the fun and games were helping make the world a better place?

Our mission is to involve kids in fun, hands-on service projects that are good for the environment and directly benefit the community.

For 5 weeks starting this June, Studio A Art Camp will integrate art, culture, Spanish, science community service and more into the most imaginative and exciting place for kids to hang out this summer.

We’ll get crazy imaginative with recycled materials to make whatever your camper can imagine, from forts to time-machines to wind-chimes to crazy cool abstract sculptures. We’ll work on no-sew scarves, blankets, and pet toys to donate to local charities and organizations. We’ll combine art and science by making papier-mâché volcanoes and learning what ingredients to add to make them “explode.”

Camp founder Jessica Antonelli is known for teaching adult painting and drawing classes here in San Miguel, but in her “past life” in the States she taught K–12 art for 5 years, and co-founded a camp for Galveston, Texas, kids called “The Growing Place” in 2013. Local San Miguel camp counselors make this camp extra special, since we’ll be infusing Spanish vocabulary throughout the day, as well as direct-teaching Spanish each day and learning about local history and traditions.

The camp is held Mondays–Fridays from 10am–4pm, with a healthy and tasty lunch included. Haha Yoga founder Brooke Dunn, who has been teaching kids and family yoga since 2008, will have our kids moving and laughing throughout the week during yoga times. Other guest teachers will bring us jewelry, dance lessons, and more. We believe healthy food and movement, and creativity make for happy kids and happy parents at the end of the day.
