From Disadvantaged Student to Philanthropist at Age 21

By Robin Loving

We expect our Jóvenes Adelante scholarship students to maintain high grade-point averages and give back, but one of our young charges has redefined what a hand up can do. The student, referred to as “he,” wishes to remain anonymous. He entered a university in the fall of 2017 to study science. This child of divorced parents didn’t expect to become the beneficiary of an inheritance. Soon after he did receive an inheritance and he did not immediately know what he would do as a result. Once the reality of his new economic situation was clear, he first decided to stay in school. He then chose to help another struggling university student who showed great potential and decided to relinquish his Jóvenes Adelante scholarship to another deserving student. To top it all off, he also decided to sponsor yet another Jóvenes Adelante student as long as that student could meet Jóvenes Adelante’s rigorous standards.

“My parents have been good examples to me, absolutely inspirational,” he said. “They have taught me that nothing is impossible. As a result, I now want to study so that I can own my own business as it will provide me with more options.” Meanwhile, he works.

Although he has joined the ranks of philanthropists, he works to learn more and to earn more so that he may help more. “The student I am helping is just the first,” he said. And what is this outstanding young man’s greatest challenge at this point in his life? “Time management,” he said. With 60-plus years ahead of him, why worry? But, of course, it’s always challenging to manage school, work, home, social, and personal time. He finds his greatest solace in friends, family, and nature.

And what does he believe his greatest strength is? “Envisioning what needs to happen within a team and also utilizing effective delegation skills,” he said. When asked if he would like to add anything else to this article, he said, “I have to thank Jóvenes Adelante for a great opportunity. The coaching I have received has been transformational. The integrated services of financial assistance, technology, mentoring, psychology, life skills, English, and a graduate network are unique. It’s clear that given Jóvenes Adelante care, its students grow. He went from financial struggle to grand philanthropy in less than a year. What a guy!

Jóvenes Adelante grants scholarships to local Mexican honors students who otherwise could not afford to attend a university and works to break the cycles of historic economic disparity into which they were born. We currently are seeking 25 sponsorships for the fall 2017 class. Sponsorships are about USD$4 day over five years.
