Danzón: One Time Only?

By Leonardo Rosen

Remember “El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables con el Club de Danzón Mercerina?” We have not presented our free admission dance event at the Jardín Principal of San Miguel de Allende since our eighth anniversary celebration on August 21, 2016. Why? I suggest that you ask the Department of Culture and Traditions, and not me. This is the most difficult of the city administrations I have had to wrestle with. Thus, I gave up and took a break.

Finally, I decided to try again. These people told me that the government sound equipment was only available on Sunday, May 21. They said I could have other dates, but that I would have to provide my own sound system. What is this? I am a volunteer with no salary and no budget for these events. I don’t have my own sound system. Believe me, if I bought or rented this type of equipment, I wouldn’t be making a gift of it to the government. I can’t afford it. So, we are doing this one event. We loved doing it for the people of this city for eight very successful years.

We cannot say if there will be any more in the Jardín after this. Thus, I invite all of our dear public to come to dance to the best danzón and other Latin music. Your show of support would mean a great deal to us. This is for everybody, rich or poor. You have always been the stars of this show!

As I write this, we are at the end of our stay in Veracruz, where we represented San Miguel de Allende with honor at a major national danzón event in Boca Del Río. Here we are known and respected. ¡“Mi Vida Por un Danzón”!
