Book Drive: The Power of Books in April

Thursday sale of used books

By Jade Arroyo

“Of the various instruments of man, the most astonishing is, without a doubt, the book. The rest are extensions of man’s body. The microscope, the telescope are extensions of his sight. The phone is voice extension; then we have the plow and the sword, extensions of his arm. But the book is something else: the book is an extension of memory and imagination.”

(The Book—Jorge Luis Borges)

April 23 is celebrated as World Book Day, and the best way to honor the best invention of man is at La Biblioteca, the cultural and community gathering artery of the town.

A book drive is a day of book collection to promote literacy, the habit of reading, and its perpetuation. In this case, the book collection is also to raise funds for the educational programs and scholarships of La Biblioteca.

La Biblioteca Pública has been one of the pillars of cultural, literary, educational, and academic life in the city. Founded in the fifties, it offered a meeting and learning space to the children of San Miguel and the loan of books to library members. And today, more than 60 years later, it is not only still open (from Monday to Saturday), but it has expanded with a large collection of books for adults and children and various free services offered to the community, as well as fundraising.

Apart from the 60,000 books in Spanish, English, German, and French found in the library, it also offers workshops, courses, classes for children in computer usage, painting, English, guitar, piano, choir. There are conferences, cinema, and theater for all the public. Scholarships are also awarded to qualified young people for secondary school and college.

Donation of books to the Biblioteca is being promoted this month. The donated books go through a process of selection and evaluation. If they are in good condition and are relevant, they are added to the collection; without being repeated or not included in the guidelines, they are on sale in La Bodega de Sorpresas on Thursday or in the section of used books in Tesoros, the library shop. All proceeds from the sales of La Bodega de Sorpresas goes to student scholarships and the revenue from the sale of used books from Tesoros goes to the purchase of new books in Spanish.

For the purchase of new books, the library staff attends two annual fairs, the Palacio de Mineria Fair during the months of February and March and the Guadalajara Fair in November. In purchasing books, the librarians take into account the books that need to be updated, those which must be replaced due to deterioration, and new additions. Users’ suggestions, trends, and new themes presented at fairs are taken into account. Currently, the Library focus itself is being updated, especially for books that lend themselves to students:  technical and academic books that must have the most current knowledge.

Support this book drive either by buying books at La Bodega on Thursdays from 10 am–1pm or at Tesoros, where you can find real gems. If you want to make a donation of new or used books to the Library, do not hesitate to approach or call. If you do not already have a membership, come early to get one and obtain access to unique books, books that have passed through many loving hands and wait on the shelf to share their knowledge with you.

Book Drive for Book Day

Every day, book donations will be received at the Bibliotheca’s main reception desk. If you have a larger donation, call 152 0293, and the books can be picked up at your house.
