What’s Blooming in Calderoni Gallery April 1?

By Edward Swift

Floral arrangements inspired by the paintings of local artists will be exhibited at the next Fábrica la Aurora art walk on April 1, and this is no Fool’s Day joke. The event is called Art in Bloom, and it represents an artistic collaboration between the San Miguel Garden Club and local artists, many of whom have galleries at the Fábrica. Here’s how it works: A garden club member has been assigned to do a floral arrangement based on a painting by a participating artist. The Aurora artists will display the arrangement and the painting side by side in the artist’s gallery. The arrangements inspired by artists from outside the Fábrica will be on display in the central patio in front of the Merry Calderoni studio/gallery. Calderoni reports that there will be 35 paintings and 35 floral arrangements scattered throughout the Fábrica.

Calderoni will also be exhibiting her works from a traveling exhibition of women artists that has just returned from Portugal. The artists are: Merry Calderoni, Marilo Carral, María José Marín, Marta Ramírez, and Beatriz Castañeda from San Miguel, along with Liliana Duering from Mexico City. Each has had six floral-inspired paintings on tour in Portugal for the past several months. The traveling exhibition entitled Entre Ramas was sponsored by the Mexican Embassies in Porto and Sintra and Mexico City.

However, the Calderoni painting chosen to inspire a garden club member is not from the Portuguese exhibit, but a purely abstract expressionist piece with no resemblance to flowers or plants. At this writing, Calderoni has no clue who will interpret her painting. “It will definitely be a challenge for the flower arranger,” she said. We will probably see many unique found objects or accessories other than pure plant life to interpret such paintings.

Be sure to attend the art walk to see the results of this unique collaboration between the Garden Club and local artists. Lots of creativity everywhere and a fun evening for all.
