Two Special Tours for Nonprofit Patronato Pro Ninos by Volunteer Guides

By Betse Davies

On Thursday, March 16, Jay Moskowitz, Peggy Jones, and Doug Lord will be leading our popular Architectural Walking Tour. This tour will be of interest to anyone who is at all curious about the remarkable buildings of downtown San Miguel which totally dominate the scene. On this guided tour you’ll view buildings which represent more than 300 years of different architectural styles and learn to identify the different types. They are not all of one style or another, and you will see transitional structures with features of two styles. It’s an architectural area frozen in time with laws to protect it.

250 pesos donation for Architectural and “Slow Walk” Historical Tours

Our second special tour of the month is the “Slow Walk” Tour on Tuesday, March 14. This tour is the brainchild of tour guide George Carlson for those with limited mobility or just plain sore feet who cannot take the regular Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Historical Walking Tours. It will be based on the Historical tour, including portions of the Architectural and Church Tours. We will work our way around the Jardín finding places to sit with an excursion into the Parroquia. George points out that this is a bit of an experiment and urges you to come and join him.

Both special tours start in the Jardín directly across the street from the Parroquia. They gather at 9:45am and start promptly at 10am, and the donation is 250 pesos. Both tours last about two-and-a-half hours. All of your donations support the work of the nonprofit Patronato Pro Ninos which provides medical, dental, and psychological care to the needy children of the 500 communities surrounding San Miguel and the city itself. This fine group has been in operation for 45 years, and the tours with the volunteer guides have been going on for 25 years.

The Historical Walking Tour is our basic orientation tour. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays it leaves from the Jardín across the street from the Parroquia at 10am, gathering at 9:45am. The donation for this tour is 200 pesos. No reservations are needed, but we do limit the size of the groups

We offer private tours for all of our tours: Historical, Architectural, and Church (Virgins, saints, and angels in four churches.) The donation for Historical tours for one to four people is 1,000 pesos, 250 pesos for each additional person. For the Architectural and Church tour the donation is 1,250 pesos for one to four people, 300 pesos for each additional person. To schedule a private tour call Lily at 152 7796 during weekday office hours, or e-mail Lily at We suggest scheduling your tours weekdays in the morning after 10am if possible. Guides are hard to find on Sundays and several buildings, including the Parroquia, are not open for tours.
