A Peace Pole for Parque Juárez

By Robin Loving

A peace pole—a handcrafted monument that displays the message May Peace Prevail on Earth on each of its four sides in four languages—will one day grace Parque Juárez, and you are invited to the kickoff event on Friday, March 10, from 6–8pm at Mesones Plaza, Mesones 57, at the northeast corner of Reloj and Mesones.

“Camino de la Paz and Rotary have long planned to build a Peace Pole in Parque Juárez, perhaps by International Peace Day on September 21, 2017,” said Tom Schneider, cofounder of Camino de la Paz and vice president for public relations and peace for the Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende–Midday. Tens of thousands of peace poles have been dedicated in 200,000 cities in 180 countries all over the world. Five other cities in Mexico have erected peace poles.

“Peace is an idea, a group of behaviors, an attitude. To have San Miguel de Allende have a visible monument to peace will help people believe that peace is possible,” said Schneider.

For Camino de la Paz, co-sponsor of this monument, the purpose of the peace pole is to provide a physical focalus point to celebrate our desire for peace. “It is not recognition of an accomplishment,” said Jean Paul Peretz, a member of Camino de la Paz. “It is a starting point for all those working for peace in San Miguel, a rallying point for the grassroots efforts of individuals, groups, and communities,” added Peretz.

Juan Zaragosa’s visionary portrait, “A Peace Pole in Parque Juarez,” will be accompanied by a unique array of pictures showing how the painting came to life. A map of the location and engineering drawings will show how the SMA peace pole will be constructed. It will be built from a lighted octagon base, with the concrete monument to be faced with engraved pink cantera stone. “The structure will be built to celebrate a living peace through education and community building,” said Schneider.

The Rotary will present the 5-minute video, “Rotary Is Peace.” Amigos de Parque Juárez and other community leaders will share their perspectives. The financial needs of this grassroots, citizen-led project will be shared. Almitri Tzigane will provide classical guitar music. Wine and other refreshments will be served.
