Donors Support Biblioteca- So Can You
By Jaci Winters
In 2016, US, Canadian, and Mexican donations and grants assisted La Biblioteca to meet its commitment to provide educational and cultural programs to the San Miguel Community. Individual donors and grants amounted to 90,086 pesos and US$21,385 in 2016. Donations helped La Biblioteca purchase books, award scholarships, provide free classes, and improve services.
Canadian donors contributed funds through Amistad Canada, which supports the Biblioteca Education Project. This funds scholarships for high school and university students, provides free classes in music, computer, and art, and purchases Spanish books. Amistad Canada issues Canadian tax receipts to its Canadian donors.
US and Mexican donors receive tax receipts directly from the Biblioteca or San Miguel Community Foundation. These donations are also used for educational programs, scholarships, books, and library services; while a grant in 2016 from the Government of the State of Guanajuato supported the purchase of a new computer server for the library.
La Biblioteca awarded 103 scholarships in 2016. This permitted 53 deserving Mexican students to attend university and 50 other students to complete high school. Scholarships were funded by generous donors, the Bodega Sorpresas (Thrift Store) sales, and five percent of gross revenue from all other Biblioteca enterprises.
Donations support literacy, the enjoyment of reading, and assist Mexican students with homework and research. In 2016, donated funds helped to purchase 85 Spanish children’s books and 215 Spanish books for young people and adults. Donated funds and sales of used books also were used to purchase books for the library’s English collection.
Hundreds of young Mexicans participated in free classes and lectures throughout 2016. In the Sala Infantil, children read and enjoy 33,099 books, while 70 young people participated in guitar, piano, and choir classes; and 354 attended computer classes.
Donations are an important and necessary source of funds for La Biblioteca, enabling it to continue the programs and services that the community of San Miguel has come to rely on. Please consider making a gift to La Biblioteca and be recognized on our Donor Wall. All donors receive a Mexican, US, or Canadian tax receipt, and their donations are tracked cumulatively. Donor Brochures are available at the reception, café, and in the courtyard to explain how you can help make a gift today. Donations can also be made online at bibliotecasma.org and canadahelps.org.
