Best of Handmade Crafts at the Artisans’ Marketplace of the San Miguel Writers’ Conference

San Miguel de Allende is world renowned for its crafts, arts, and design; and the Artisans’ Marketplace brings some of the best of these creations to the San Miguel Writers’ Conference. Discover our magical marketplace in the Hotel Real de Minas Gardens, next to the Writers’ Conference Bookstore, open to the public from Wednesday, February 15, to Sunday, February 19, from 10am to 5pm. In the Artisans’ Marketplace, you will discover original quality handmade, fair trade, fair priced, artisanal gifts created by local artists, both Mexican and foreign. Some of the featured work includes San Miguel’s finest textile shop, AbraZos San Miguel, whose work is sold at museums all over the world; Las Rancheritas Rug Hookers, a renowned women’s cooperative from the San Miguel countryside; Javier Barra’s stunning photographs of San Miguel’s cultural heritage; and Paradigms on Paper, featuring books, stationary, and photographs of the traditions and people of San Miguel de Allende.

Also exhibited will be curated works by artists from other regions of Mexico: Leonardo Cruz Handmade Leather Journals from Mexico City; Antiguas Maravillas Filigree Jewelry from Oaxaca, which is reviving the classic Mexican silver style; Blanca Gómez folk art painted animals made in her Oaxacan village for generations; Galería Tanana Huichol Jewelry from Sayulita, some of the best beaded jewelry in the world; EsArte Prison Jewelry from Querétaro, where incarcerated women are taught jewelry skills to earn income for their families; and Pop Up Cards that dazzle with their originality of cut designs.
The Artisans’ Marketplace is also a community space to converse with artisans, keynote speakers, other writers, and conference attendees, while purchasing a gift to treasure from San Miguel for friends and family. We are open every day of the Conference, from 10am–5pm. Cash is accepted in either pesos or dollars. VAMANOS.
