Just Jazz “Straight, No Chaser!”
By Wendy Bichel
Ken Bichel and Iraida Noriega are best known for their unpredictable, eclectic and— I must add—mind boggling improvisations, as evidenced in their recent CD As One (available on iTunes) and their dramatic multi-stylistic arrangements of well-known compositions.

However, at 8:30pm on Saturday, February 18, at MuVarte Gallery (next to Sapasma), Ken and Iraida will take a journey through the traditional world of our favorite jazz standards. A warning or a promise, depending on your musical taste—the treatments of these may end up being anything but traditional. Ballads like “Lover Man,” “My Foolish Heart,” and “Angel Eyes” will be contrasted against pulsing renditions of “On Green Dolphin Street,” “My Favorite Things,” and “Straight, No Chaser”; and such Latin tunes as “Quizas,” “Insensatez,” “Wave,” “La Llorona,” and many more.
Two special guests will grace the stage that night, the ultra-elegant and über-talented Maria Sanchez will sing for the first time with keyboardist Bichel, and SMA icon Doug Robinson (Ken’s friend, brother, and alter ego), will also be there. I personally can’t wait for this concert and look forward to seeing you there.
