Intimate Flamenco Show
By Alan Grishman
As a lead to her weekly show, flamenco artist La Yerbabuena (Angela Garcia) talked about the energy we were about to experience. From the moment the guitarist and percussionist eased into the world of flamenco, the room was infused with the wild energy of music, singing, and dance. Forty people crowded the sala in Angela´s Atascadero house. The smiling faces and shouts of olé attested to the excitement felt in the room, as the rat-a-tat of the dancers’ shoes accompanied the performers’ sensual body movements.

Flamenco crossed the ocean from Spain to Mexico, where it enjoys an avid following. Sanmiguelenses are fortunate to have several practitioners of the art performing regularly. The venues vary from cafés to theaters, all the way to Angela´s living room, where the audience was just inches away from the artists. The dancers performed on a wooden dance floor specially designed to magnify the sound of the typical flamenco steps.
When all was done, the audience was served a hearty soup (fabada) and drinks. The group put on some CDs, and many in the audience tried their best to imitate the flamenco movements they had enjoyed. That’s a stunning advantage of living room over theater. An hour later, most of the public were still enjoying soup and clicking their heels on the dance floor.
In addition to organizing her flamenco shows (and teaching flamenco classes), Angela La Yerbabuena also designs and sews the elaborate costumes worn by the dancers. Intimate Flamenco takes place each Friday at 5 pm, at Tanque 24 in Colonia Atascadero. To reserve a place, in English, Spanish, or French, call (045) 442 270 2069, or just show up. An evening not to be missed!
