Women’s Solidarity Rally and Walk

By Mary Norquist

On January 21, millions of people around the world will gather to walk in support of the Women’s March on Washington, DC. They will all stand together in solidarity with each other for the protection of women’s rights, safety, health, and families worldwide.

Rally and Walk
“Women’s Rights = Human Rights”
Women’s Solidarity Rally and Walk
Sat, Jan 21, 1pm
Parque Juárez
(Meet at the Aldama gate at Tenerias)
Please wear red and/or white

Expats and Mexicans will join this effort here in San Miguel to show support for these values and to show support for our Mexican sisters in their efforts for equality and rights.

The rhetoric of the past election cycle in the United States has not only insulted and threatened women in the US but has encouraged and supported similar behavior around the world. And not only women, but people of all statuses: Muslims and those of diverse religious faiths, people who identify as LGBTQIA, native people, black and brown people, people with disabilities, survivors of sexual assault.

The Women’s March on Washington will not only send a bold message to the new administration in the US, but it will signal the world that women’s rights are human rights. We stand united with this idea and want to promote Solidarity Without Borders. This is not just an issue for the US.

We encourage all of you … men, women, expats, Mexicans, and everyone else … to join with us on Saturday, January 21, at 1pm at Parque Juárez (Aldama gate at Tenerias) for a peaceful rally and walk through the park. This weekend is the culmination of many festivities celebrating the birthday of Ignacio Allende, after whom San Miguel de Allende is named. Respecting this celebration, we are not marching in the Jardín or in the streets, only in the park. We encourage you to wear red and/or white, and we will have balloons that will be used midway through the walk for you to carry. (The balloons will not be released into the sky for environmental reasons.)

There will be a brief address in English and Spanish. Please spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and associates. If you believe that women’s rights are human rights, then you need to be there. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday.
