A Toy for Each Child¾Delivered by Three Kings
By Sharon Doherty
During the early days of January, more than 750 children aged 3–12 in six rural communities of San Miguel de Allende joyfully received toys and gifts from their beloved Reyes Magos. The communities included Banda, Don Francisco, Vergel (Guadalupe Victoria), Ejido de Tirado (Plan Moreno), Plan Juárez, and El Lindero.
After the toys were gathered and wrapped in brightly colored paper, a group of good-hearted citizens traveled together over two days in car caravans. They helped organize the eagerly awaiting children into age groups and gender and then helped each of the Kings give a special toy to each child, one at a time. It was gratifying beyond words to see so many beautiful, smiling faces, to receive so many warm handshakes (and an occasional hug and kiss), and to meet so many appreciative mothers. Thank you to the group of Kings, who rotated their responsibilities at each of the communities: you all displayed such warmth and grace and will long be remembered by the children for sharing the joy. We were pleased to be joined by the Hatsandscarves Campokids group, who diligently worked at ensuring that every little one under three years old received his/her own special handknit hat.
Thank you to all who participated by volunteering their time to help wrap the toys and to those who participated in the delivery, especially those who were kind and brave enough to provide transportation along the dusty and bumpy rural roads. A few good people were vital in making contact in the communities, the boots on the ground, so to speak. We couldn’t have done it without you: María Aguilar, Olivia Nuñiz, and Chef Valentino of Feed the Hungry; Ezequiel Mojica and Guadalupe of Apoyo; Enrique Orvanaños; Bill Wilkinson; and Carmen Delzell.
We are very grateful to the local San Miguel business people who graciously stepped up by accepting toy donations at their premises. Our sincerest appreciation goes to Café Muro, Café Buen Dia, Hank’s, Solutions, Firenze, La Frontera, La Conexión, Longhorn’s BBQ House, Agave Sotheby’s International Realty, and El Caracol Condominiums.
Most of all we wish to thank you, the wonderful people of our community, who gave toys, gifts, and cash to this endeavor; you are the soul of our community. These acts of kindness don’t happen without your generosity and goodwill. Thank you. You are all kings in our books.
