Three Kings Day Toy Drive

By Sharon Doherty

The seventh annual toy drive for rural children is now underway! A group of friends are asking you to join in “the joy of giving to others” by purchasing a new toy for a boy or girl between the ages of 4 and 12 years who attends school in underserved San Miguel rural communities. The gifts will be collected (we are aiming to collect about 500), later wrapped, and then delivered to the children for their special day, Dia de los Magos on January 6 by the Three Kings dressed in appropriate attire. Once again this year, we will be supported by Toni Roberts and her great group of knitters who will provide wonderful warm hats and scarves to the littlest ones.

The following businesses are graciously participating by accepting your toy donations during their regular business hours. Please drop by with an unwrapped toy and leave it in the specially decorated bin. And why not stop to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat while you’re there? Our appreciation goes to Muro Café, San Gabriel 1, Colonia Obraje; Buen Dia Café, Callejon del Pueblito, Centro; Hank’s, Hidalgo 12, Centro; Solutions, Recreo 11, Centro; Firenze, Recreo 13, Centro; La Frontera, Stirling Dickinson 28 Local 7, Plaza Pueblito; La Conexión, Aldama 3, Centro; and Long Horn’s BBQ House, Salida a Celaya 6.

You are also invited to a wrapping party at the Escuela de Educación Especial at Umarán 107 on December 30 between 1 and 4pm. All the required supplies will be provided, but if you happen to have a little extra paper stashed away, it will be helpful to bring it along. Most important is that volunteers bring their holiday spirit and, if possible, an unwrapped toy, as we surely don’t want to disappoint any hopeful children. The number of gifts normally falls short for girls ages 9 to 12. While out shopping, if you happen to see fashion dolls, small shoulder purses, hair ornaments, fuzzy cushions, or art supplies, these gifts will be much appreciated. Most aim to spend an average of approximately 150 pesos for each gift which helps keep things equitable for all. Please contact John Doherty at jd98lv@hotmail.com should you wish to join us on wrapping day. Thank you for your generosity and our very best wishes to all for Happy Holidays!
