A Tribute to Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen

By David Johansse

“I took trip after trip, sitting on my terrace in Greece, waiting to see God,” Leonard Cohen once mused, “but generally, I just ended up with a bad hangover.” Please join some of San Miguel’s finest musicians for their tribute to this legendary singer-songwriter at Shelter Theater, Thursday, December 29 at 7pm. Local greats Tom Driscoll, William Henderson, Joan Elena Goldberg, Emily Pickrell, and Jean Pascal Monzies will be performing the works of Cohen as we work to keep his magic alive forever. It’s a fond remembrance to a musical giant, sure to be a major San Miguel event.

Chasing the Dragon, Wednesday, December 28 at 5pm: Produced by the FBI, Chasing the Dragon is a wrenching portrait of the escalating opioid epidemic in Middle America as told through the frank testimonies of young addicts and their family members. Now in recovery, the former addicts’ reflections are painfully candid and instructive, detailing how pervasive the problem is and how personally destructive it can be.

The Pleasure of Finding Things Out, Friday, December 30 at 5pm: Filmed just seven short years prior to Richard Feynman’s untimely death, The Pleasure of Finding Things Out features an extensive conversation with the acclaimed Nobel Prize winner and celebrated humanist. His colorful and lucid stories make abstract concepts tangible, and his warm presence is sure to inspire interest and awe from even the most unlikely student of science.

Every Tuesday at 7:30pm “Open Mic.” If you want your 10 minutes of fame, then this is the place for you! Regulars call it the “Cheers Bar” of San Miguel. Get on the stage and strut your stuff: music, dance, acting, comedy—you can do anything you like¾or just sit back and enjoy the fun. 50 pesos audience/30 pesos for performers (includes drink).

Where is Shelter Theater, you ask? Now we are on the map—the one in the Que Pasa (events section), in the upper left hand corner. Got an idea for a show? Shelter VG4’s theater and class/performance space are also available for private events.
