New Work by Silvia Velásquez
By Silvia Velásquez
I am a Mexican artist actually living in France and now presenting my recent work at Juan Ezcurdia Gallery in Fábrica La Aurora from December 15 to 18.
The work in the exhibition is a series of large drawings with ink (brou de noix) and gold leaf on Japanese paper, carried out during a residency in Syracuse, Sicily.
The works play with contrast from the Sicilian coast, where the liquid lava from Mount Etna solidified into wildly shaped rocks when it contacted the Mediterranean Sea, turning fragile to strong, soft to harsh, fluid to solid, hot to cold … constant changes as in our daily life, full of contrast and contradiction, surprising, sometimes painful but always rewarding.
