Holiday Time for Architectural and Historical Walking Tours
By Betse Davies
Looking forward to events during the holiday season? To discover more about this very special town Patronato Pro Ninos offers two types of tours to fill the bill, Architectural and Historical Walking Tours. Both tours meet in the same place, in the Jardin directly across the street from the Parroquia, the parish church which is the hallmark of San Miguel. At 10am both tours start and they last about 2 1/2 hours of mostly level walking.. All our experienced guides are proud volunteers for Patronato Pro Ninos, a NGO which has provided medical, dental and psychological care to the needy children of the city and the vast rural area of 500 communities which surrounds San Miguel.

The Architectural Tour will have its monthly tour on Thursday, December 15. It will be led by two experts on the subject, Peggy Jones and Doug Lord. No reservations required. This tour will be of interest to anyone who is at all curious about the fabulous buildings of San Miguel. On this tour you will view buildings that represent more than 400 years of different architectural styles (with one exception) . It is an architectural area that is frozen in time with laws in place to protect it. No other city in Mexico has that distinction to my knowledge. On the periphery of this area you will see several examples of today’s modern style. The route taken on this tour is by and large different than the Historical Tour. The donation for this tour is 250 pesos.
You can also have a private Architectural tour. Email Lily at info@patronatoproninos. Her phone number during office hours 9am to4pm is 152 7796. The donation for these private tours is a minimum of 1,200 pesos for 1 to 4 people. Add 300 pesos for each additional person.
English speaking guides lead groups in our Historical Walking Tours every Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the year. These tours are 200 pesosand we have adequate guides to insure that the tour groups are small. This tour is the best introduction to the colorful world of San Miguel. We talk about its culture, folklore and history. This city was the birthplace of the revolution against Spain in 1810. This accounting becomes more realistic and exciting as all the buildings involved are still standing! The Biblioteca (started more than 65 years ago by a Canadian woman), the interior of the Parroquia, and Bellas Artes are on the tour. In the latter building you will see the unfinished mural of one of the three outstanding Mexican muralists, David Siquerios. We ask that you come to those tours at 9:45 to insure the10am departure time.
Private Historical Tours are also available. The donation for these tours is 1000 pesos for one to four people, Add 250 pesos for each additional person. Information on how to book one of these tours is listed above in regard to the private Architectural Tours.
We hope you will consider one or both of our tours during the Holiday Season. This tour is valuable for residents, their guests and tourists.
