Wow: A Week of Childhood Wonder

By Mireille Rita Grovier, Photography by Jay Grovier

The week of November 12 provided the children, faculty, and volunteers of Centro Infantil San Pablo (CISP) a wonderful experience beyond their wildest dreams.

It began Saturday, November 12, at Iglesia San Pablo, when a magical trunk was opened to reveal fairy tale delights for sale to benefit the school. These featured the mystical art works of WOW designer Alma Guerrero who combines antique artifacts gleaned from diverse sources, which miraculously evolve under her creative vision into spectacular items of jewelry, clothing, and household objects. Despite a chilly afternoon, the sale and accompanied light refreshments and warming sangria proved a financial success for the school and the artist.

The week ended on Friday, November 18, with the patriotic celebration of Revolution Day, orchestrated and choreographed by the school’s amazing Directora Patricia Palacios Cortez. Students and faculty were festively attired in revolutionary garb to honor the cause that achieved the independence of Mexico. The girls wore colorful dresses, many in the red, green, and white colors of the Mexican flag. The boys were adorably decorated with masculine moustaches and clothed in period attire. The highlight of the morning was the presentation of the Mexican flag by five-year-old members of the school’s graduating class. Music, dances, and songs by students, teachers, parents, siblings, and volunteers swept the school’s patio and wafted through the surrounding neighborhoods.

Centro Infantil San Pablo is a pre-school for children ages three to five years, founded by St. Paul’s Anglican Church to provide underprivileged children with a quality education.
