What Happened When a Mississippi Native Refused to Retire?
By Jan Davis
Two and a half years ago, Kevin Ward was horsing around with his Labrador retrievers in his Mississippi home. A wrong move landed Kevin on the scored concrete floor, and his skull cracked open. Nothing was the same after that. He spent 4.5 months in the hospital and 6 weeks in a coma. With numerous injuries resulting from the accident, Kevin moved to San Miguel de Allende to be closer to his mother, father, sister, and brother-in-law. The family had been traveling to SMA for 25 years, and it’s now their home.
But Kevin knew he was too young to retire. Back in Mississippi he loved boating, hunting, and having a good time. “You’ve led the life of three men,” his father would tease him. So Kevin tapped into his creative juices and began creating beautiful leather items, such as travel bags and accessories. It took him over a year of experimenting with Mexican manufacturers and leather suppliers to provide the quality he demanded at an affordable price point.
The result: San Miguel Leather Co. These fine products can be found at a handful of shops around SMA, and most recently at the Biblioteca’s La Tienda. Please drop by and discover their beauty and quality. I’m sure you won’t leave La Tienda without one!
