Introducing Frutas y Verduras, A Fresh Food Lover’s Guide to Mexico

All over Mexico you’ll find produce unfamiliar to native English speakers. Have you tasted cactus fruit, tropical tubers or vibrant greens, such as quintoniles, flor de nabo, verdolagas? Do you savor fruit, like juicy guanabana, creamy rich zapote amarillo or mamey?

Join us at Mercado Sano, where Mexican produce expert, Margaret Hefner, will be presenting her English language field guide to 50 varieties of Mexican fruits and vegetables. Her extensive, easy-to-use iBook has all the information you need on each ingredient. Learn how to choose and store it, its seasonal availability, scientific name and nutritional details. Food slideshows show multiple views to help with identification, along with audio to help you ask for it in Spanish.

Hefner worked as a personal chef and caterer here in San Miguel. So, she’s included simple, tasty recipes for most ingredients, except for those that are best eaten fresh as they are. And she’s used her art background to design a clear, attractive full-color layout with photographs.

At the demonstration, Hefner will show attendees how to use the simple digital format to discover fruits and vegetables they’ll see locally and in their travels around Mexico. Not only does this produce offer variety and nutrition to our diet, its continued use helps preserve the biodiversity and culinary traditions of the region.

This is a unique opportunity to remind consumers to visit the local vendors who set up shop all around town, including the front of Mercado Sano, the bus stop on Insurgentes, the Tuesday Market and other produce stands. As we decide where to spend our pesos on food, Hefner encourages consumers to spread their wealth among locals who farm or glean these fresh ingredients to bring into town. These Mexicans are preserving ingredients at the core of their traditional cuisine. And some of theses foods, like amaranth (quelites) and corn are valued Prehispanic ingredients.

In the US and Canada, there’s a surge in interest in ‘heritage’ ingredients, and you pay a premium for them at farmers markets and Whole Foods. Here, they are standard foods accessible to all. But since the UNESCO designation for Mexican cuisines these foods have been brought further into the limelight by high-end chefs. Even the younger generation of Mexicans is rediscovering them.
