San Miguel Jazz and Blues Festival: For All the Public and All Pockets

By Ana Barrón

We are just a few days from the launch of the 22nd edition of the San Miguel International Jazz and Blues Festival, all of whose concerts will be held in the Bellas Artes auditorium on Hernández Macías. In addition to presenting a program for all members of the public there will be free events, such as film screenings for young people and children to introduce them to different kinds of music.

On Wednesday and Thursday, November 16 and 17, free jazz-and-blues-themed movies will be shown at noon, while the following day, Friday, November 18, the San Miguel Jazz Cats will offer a free concert in tribute to the late Ken Basman, a renowned Canadian guitarist who lived and played in Mexico for 27 years.

This year, the program offers great artists such as the Alex Mercado Trio—which opens the festival on Wednesday, November 16, at 7:30pm, Whitney Shay from San Diego the following night at the same time, and People vs. Larsen from New York City on Friday, November 18, at 8pm.

Saturday, November 19, at 8pm brings the Grammy Award-winning duo Geoffrey Keezer and Guillian Margot, and the festival closes on Sunday, November 20, at 6pm with a tribute concert to the great Billy Joel by the San Miguel Jazz Cats, led by Antonio Lozoyo and a number of guest artists.

The Festival is selling advance tickets through the PayPal system, and buyers should present proof of purchase at the Bellas Rates box office 30 minutes before the concert. They are also on sale at La Conexión and the Biblioteca. Part of the proceeds of the festival will be donated to the nonprofit association FAI.
