The Last Jitterbug Swing Party of the Year

By David Ziff

Saturday, November 12, San Miguel’s own Siempre Swing Band will return to El Sindicato with dynamic vocalists Johnny Favourite, Mittie Roger, and Barbara Lee to present the last jitterbug swing party of the year. As a very special treat, joining Siempre Swing will be the exciting professional dance duo Peter and Roxy Molina of Mexico City and their invited guest, professional lindy hopper Jamin Jackson from Oklahoma.

Peter and Roxy started their swing dance community, Forever Swing, in Mexico City five years ago. The Jitterbug Swing Party will be the finale of their second annual intensive swing dance workshop in San Miguel. They have brought in Jamin Jackson of Oklahoma for this year’s event. Peter, Roxy, and Jamin will demo their exciting dance moves during breaks in the music. And their workshop students will perform a choreographed number for the crowd.

Friendships between town expats and Mexican musicians have produced the exciting and compelling sounds of San Miguel’s own Siempre Swing Band, a big-band style concert and dance band. The band will take you down that musical memory lane from the hot swing classics, “In The Mood,” “I Can’t Believe You’re In Love with Me,” and “Jump, Jive, and Wail” through the jump blues of “Choo Choo Cha Boogie,” and rhythm and blues “Kansas City,” to the early rock n’ roll of Johnny B. Goode. To keep things interesting, there will be a sprinkling of Latin dance tunes.

There will be a free introductory swing dance lesson at 7:30, just prior to the dance/concert. No partner is required. This is a rare opportunity to learn from these fine swing dance professionals who are in town for a three-day swing dance workshop, and we have been lucky enough to have them for the evening at El Sindicato.

For the event, El Sindicato will be transformed into a club with a large dance floor, small tables, auditorium seating, and bar. If you want to dance or just tap your foot, schmoozing at your table … if you’re “In The Mood” to “Jump, Jive, and Wail”… you’ll want to spend the evening with Siempre Swing, Saturday, November 12, at El Sindicato.
