We live in a world of increasing imbalances. The faster pace of human life, brought on by our wonderful advances in science and technology, brings with it greater levels of stress and further disconnections from other people and from nature. The fundamental essence of t’ai chi, the importance of harmony and balance, can be lost.
T’ai chi practices t’ai chi chuan, qigong, and philosophy are definitely changing to keep up with the times. It is possible t’ai chi will emerge as a serious solution to the main challenges or imbalances of modern society. It will become familiar, mainstream not niche, a fundamental part of the fabric of society, in schools, hospitals, workplaces, public places, sports, entertainment, and art. T’ai chi could become a bridge between generations as young and old play together. The philosophy can be embraced by every religion and culture, providing a guideline for science, education, politics, and governance.
But, in the midst of all the change, we must remember to have fun. Enjoy the journey of t’ai chi, a never ending path toward harmony. That’s why the ancient masters reminded us continuously that t’ai chi was meant to be played, not worked.
The course is led by David-Dorian Ross, the founder and CEO of Taijifit. He has a BA in Human Movement Studies from San Francisco State University and has trained in China with championship martial arts coaches. Mr. Ross is the host of the PBS series T’ai Chi: Health and Happiness and the author of five books on health and wellness, including Exercising the Soul.
