Experience a Traditions Dia de los Muertos in the Campo

By Anna Louise Hudson

Rural Education Institute of Mexico is holding their fourth annual Día de los Muertos cultural fair on Saturday, October 29, from 4–7 pm in La Palma. The event will showcase a traditional Día de los Muertos celebration in the campo. Our high school scholars will be presenting on the significance of the altar, and explaining the items provided for the offering will help them to practice their English skills. We will also have games for children, Catrina face painting, sugar skull candies, food, and crafts made by the youth from our Estrellas del Campo after school program. All proceeds from the event will go towards funding our La Palma scholars’ educational needs, including uniforms and transportation to and from San Miguel.

Rural Ed’s mission is to reduce the educational gap for young people in rural areas in order to offer equal opportunities for higher education. This is done through after-school programs for primary and secondary school students, scholarships to high school, and mentorship and support to youth by our group of international interns.

La Palma is located about 10 km from San Miguel de Allende on the road to Dolores Hidalgo. A car pool will be leaving from St Paul’s church at 3:30pm Saturday afternoon. Please RSVP to ruraled1@gmail.com if you would like a ride or have any other questions.
