Theater Shelter
New York cabaret performer and recording artist Frans Bloem returns to Shelter Theater with his LGBT benefit show “Kabarett Above & Beyond.” We recently interviewed the internationally-acclaimed cabaret singer:

Shelter: What is your motivation for bringing “Kabarett Above & Beyond” to San Miguel?

Frans: As an artist, I know that this community has a respect and awareness of art. It was a serendipitous flow that brought me to San Miguel and these connections keep happening for me. You have to trust that you are in the right place at the right time. Really, I feel like I am recognized here in San Miguel.

Shelter: What is the craziest thing that has happened during a performance?

Frans: Well, there was this one show when I was performing in New York at cabaret “Club 88.” I had put my jacket on the back of a chair onstage and after a few minutes a woman jumped out of the audience and started dancing on my jacket! It had caught fire and she was stomping on it to put it out. A review of the show said, “Frans Bloem was so good, he set the place on fire!”

Shelter: Do you still get nervous before a performance?

Frans: Not really. I just get so excited that I can’t wait to share my interpretation of these songs. Every song has its own story, and I bring something personal from my own life to these songs.

Shelter: What advice would you give to a young performer starting out?

Frans: I would focus on the lyrics and find out what their personal motivation is for singing the song. Usually a person has an emotional connection to the song and if they keep that in mind, they can develop their own interpretation of the song. Keep it personal!

Frans Bloem: “Kabarett Above & Beyond” at Shelter Theater, October 21 and 22 at 7pm. Tickets available at the Biblioteca and online at www.sheltervg4.com.

Guaranteeing you a spooky Halloween, Shelter presents thrillers from “the master of suspense” Alfred Hitchcock. On Wednesday, October 26 at 5pm: The Birds. And what scarefest would be complete without Psycho on Friday, October 28 at 5pm? See these creepy classics on our super-sized screen with someone to hang onto!
