Energy Flow in Your Surroundings

In this lecture we will learn about feng shui, a qi-balancing technique for our environment, as t’ai chi and qigong are qi-balancing techniques for our inner environment. Feng shui is “wind and water” in Chinese. It is the ancient Taoist science of manipulating our environment so wind, water, and qi energy can flow in just the right amount and in the most beneficial way in our lives. Throughout this course we have been learning about qigong―the ancient Chinese craft of manipulating the inner life force, the qi—for health, self-defense, and spiritual development. We can also learn to change the flow of qi in our houses, yards, and places of business. We can learn to improve the “health” of our relationships, careers, and finances. Along with learning about feng shui, harmonizing the flow of qi in our surroundings, we are introduced to something called the “five elements theory.”

Feng shui has been used for thousands of years and is still very popular all over the world in planning the construction and interior design of homes and businesses. Feng shui works by changing the flow of qi in the environment. The fundamental principles are known as “the three treasures,” heaven, earth, and man. Man is the connection between heaven and earth.

The five elements are wood, water, fire, earth, and metal. The flow of qi is mapped according to when each element is most influential in the human body. They are an extension of the theory of yin and yang. They are expressions of qi energy. The five elements describe a certain state or vibration of qi that can also be seen in the world. Wood, for example, represents the energy of growth and expansion. Fire is associated with the season of summer, the sun, the color red, and the human organ of the heart. The five elements both create and destroy one another. When you notice your life is out of balance, you can learn how to balance the qi and restore balance to your life.

The course is led by David-Dorian Ross, the founder and CEO of Taijifit. He has a BA in Human Movement Studies from San Francisco State University and has trained in China with championship martial arts coaches. Mr. Ross is the host of the PBS series T’ai Chi: Health and Happiness and the author of five books on health and wellness, including Exercising the Soul.
