Organic Market’s New Incarnation
Smile, You Are in San Miguel
By Jade Arroyo
Recently, our local organic market changed locations. Now it is located a little beyond Ancha de San Antonio, near the beginning of Salida a Celaya, where the Don Pedro hardware store used to be.
Along with the Saturday TOSMA market, now the adjacent Mercado Sano within the building is open every day from 8am to 8pm.
More than 20 providers of high quality fresh organic produce and gourmet food are integrated in Mercado Sano, with gastronomic and fresh food offerings to eat in or take out.
This organization also aims to be in connection with local culture, creating a community network and an outreach program to share local culture with newcomers.
One of the spaces will be the “seed salon,” which will showcase local artists and performers, along with the several different categories of produce, cheese, and bread, an aguamiel bar, and a nursery. This project seeks to promote local economy and spread the ideal of fair trade. The store is managed communally, and its vendors share the rent. Inclusion means keeping prices reasonable, so everyone can afford good, fair, clean food.
Atención was at both the new Mercado Sano and the traditional six-year-old TOSMA market, where visitors populated the place, filling it with life and building community bonds.
