Amigos de la Presa events this month include a Full Moon Paddle, October 16 at 7pm; an Early Morning Paddle and Brunch, October 20 at 9am; a Two Churches Paddle, October 23 at 9:30am; and a Birdwatching Paddle, October 25 at 7:30am. In addition, there will be a shoreline cleanup on October 29 at 9:30am. El Charco Botanic Garden will host an art sale from October 29 through November 6, 11am until 4pm. In addition, it is offering a botanic illustration workshop from November 28 to December 2, 10am to 2pm, with Susan Dimarchi for 2,250 pesos for members, 2,500 for nonmembers. Feed the Hungry will host Ghouls for Schools on October 31 from 5:30 to 10:30pm at El Cincuenta y Ocho Restaurant and Concert Bar, Mesones 58. All devils, angels, saints, and sinners are invited to help scare up funds for new school kitchens in needy communities. Come as you are or in costume and enjoy tapas, wine, beer, soft drinks, live music, and dancing in Hell’s Kitchen. Phantom of the Opera songs will be performed by soprano Gabriela Perales at 7:30pm. Professional face painting and portraits will be offered for a few pesos more, as will Penca y Piedra mescal shots. Raffles will be held for gift certificates from local restaurants, and a cash bar will be open. Individual tickets are US$85 or 1,500 pesos. Blocks of 10 tickets are US$75 USD or 1,300 pesos each. Net proceeds from one ticket will provide 116 hot school lunches for San Miguel’s poorest children. Tickets are being sold at La Conexión, Solutions, La Victoriana, and online. Lifelong Learning is offering a trip to San Gabriel, Jalisco, from October 21 through 23 to allow participants to practice their Spanish skills through literature. Libros Para Todos is seeking donations for 700 copies of La Formula del Doctor Funes by Francisco Hinojosa so that they can be distributed to encourage children to read. US$50 donors will receive handmade thank-you cards from Mexican children who are in the program. US$100 donors will receive that and a signed copy of the book. ProMusica’s season will include pianist Brian Ganz, November 13; cellist Nicholas Tavares, December 3 and 4; clarinetist Richard Stolzman, January 7 and 8; and violinist Andrew Sords, January 14 and 15. Following will be Cuarteto Latinoamericano, January 21 and 22; pianist Mizuzu Tanaka, January 27 and 29; cello/piano duo Amit Peled and Alon Goldstein, February 3 and 4; Madam Butterfly, February 10 and 12; and Amernet String Quartet, February 24 and 25. The season will culminate with the Pacific Piano Trio, March 3 and 5; pianist Anton Nel, March 11 and 12; piano quintet Vega String Quartet, March 17 and 19; and the annual garden concert, March 26, featuring the Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet. Rural Education Institute of Mexico will host its annual wine tasting on October 27 at 6pm. Wine will be paired with four courses, and dessert will be prepared by Antonio Delgadillo of Firenze at Casa Sarah, calle de la Alhondiga 1, Villa de los Frailes. Tickets are 700 pesos/person in advance, 750 pesos at the door. Please park on the side of the street so that traffic flow will not be impeded.
