25th Anniversary of Charco del Ingenio
Smile, You Are in San Miguel
By Jade Arroyo
On Friday, September 30, the second new moon of the month occurred, a rare and magical astrological event. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of El Charco del Ingenio, the team from Camino Silvestre organized a big white soirée near this beautiful botanical garden and natural and cultural reserve. Besides being an ode to everything that represents this incredible natural space and organization, the party was also a fundraiser to continue with their labor and for the next International Festival of Hummingbirds.
The dress code was white to become one with this place of peace (so declared by the Dalai Lama in 2004). Music from the Veracruz Son Jarocho group Los Vega enhanced the dinner, art, music, and dance.
El Charco del Ingenio is the nature preserve and botanical garden of San Miguel de Allende, an independent association and nonprofit organization that is also a ritual space for indigenous and traditional cultural expressions. Comprising 70 hectares contiguous to the city, it is really an extraordinary natural monument. Its name comes from a legendary pool in the back of a stunning glen, where historical vestiges remain. A dam extends into the wetlands, where birds abound midst large populated slopes of vegetation and semi-arid areas. For more information on how to help and get involved visit elcharco.org.
