Martín Habacuc, Spanish Room

Meet La Biblioteca

By Jade Arroyo

In this series we present the personalities that make up the institution of the Biblioteca Pública San Miguel de Allende—its staff and the people who every day dedicate their work and energy.

Martín, or Martincillo as he is called with affection by some of us, is a reserved young man of 31, in charge of the Spanish Room. Among his functions is to assist users in finding books. He also files books in their places according to the Dewey Decimal System, is in charge of copier technology, and coordinates the boys and girls who come to do social service. These students learn the precious work of being caretakers of books, which Martin himself has done for nearly 10 years.

If you do not know him yet, it’s easy to recognize his slim figure as he walks hurriedly through the facilities.

Martín also covers for his companions during their lunch hours, at the café, at reception, or in the various rooms and services.

Martín always wears his radio, so if you want to locate someone, you can approach him and ask him to help you find the appropriate department.

Martín (whose middle name means “hugs”) is an avid reader. When it is quiet, he can often be found reading a novel. He loves thrillers, mystery novels, and science fiction. Isaac Asimov and Mario Puzo are his favorite authors. He’s also a fan of cinema in the same genres.

“Books nourish you,” says this self-taught young man. He likes reading because for him literature is a constant source of inspiration, enjoyed in a place of tranquility. He also says that knowing about books, what they’re about, and where they are located helps him to become a better librarian.

Born in the torrid northern city of Guaymas in Sonora, Martin came to San Miguel de Allende at the age of three with his mother, who is a native. Working in the library has helped him to become more assertive and to appreciate the importance of working for what he wants to receive. It is satisfying for him to know that people appreciate his assistance and are happy with the personalized service he gives.
