The Yoga Room Opens

By Judi Thompson

A modest sign on a quiet street in Colonia San Antonio announces the opening of The Yoga Room. A meeting place designed for all those who want a tranquil space to learn and practice Hatha Yoga, this small studio is not in competition with the many excellent yoga businesses in San Miguel.

The Yoga Room offers individualized instruction for small groups or private lessons as well as classes for children. Customized programs for individual needs are offered by appointment. Bilingual classes are provided in both English and Spanish in order to share the traditional Sanscrit asanas from India.

The Yoga Room currently holds regular scheduled one-hour classes for the children of Ojala Niños, a nonprofit organization providing daily free classes in the arts, music, and sports to over 100 children in the rural indigenous community of San Miguel Viejo.

Judi Thompson, the author of Healthy Pregnancy The Yoga Way (Doubleday & Co. New York) and the first book on the subject, hopes to introduce the ancient practice of Yoga to her Mexican neighbors who may be unfamiliar with it as well as those aficionados looking for a private place to practice. Thompson is also the author of the Ginger Frye Private Eye Yoga Mystery series, available through and Barnes & Noble bookstores, with seven books now in print and the eighth soon to be published. Each story in the series is based on a special yogasana, i.e., 1 Dead Men Don’t Pose, Savasana, Dead Man’s Pose and 7 A Twist of Terror, Ardha Matsyendrasana, Spinal Twist. Thompson has practiced and taught yoga to all ages for many years in Hawaii, Oregon and Mexico.
