Nothing Fancy, originally published in 1984, is a collection of recipes and stories showing Diana’s interest in all things culinary, from the times in her mother’s kitchen in England to her years in kitchens throughout Mexico and the world.
Diana has spent her life showing the world how to cook the wonderful regional cuisines of Mexico. Her books have given cooks around the world a way to experience Mexican cuisine in a way that is accessible and accurate. Diana insists on using correct ingredients and preparation techniques, urging cooks to look for organic and non-genetically modified ingredients. The “Mick Jagger of Mexican Cuisine,” a label she wears with pride, is an accurate description of this crusader for Mexican food around the world. From her trademark leather pants to her no-holds-barred approach to criticizing the destruction of our diets, and indeed our world, by the food industry, Diana never stops fighting for better, healthier food available to more people. And she never stops fighting for the authentic cuisine of Mexico.
Although famous for her painstakingly researched Mexican recipes, Nothing Fancy shows Diana’s personal love for fabulous cuisines throughout the world and her fond remembrance of the dishes of her native England. Filled with wonderful descriptions of her life, you will find recipes for yeast breads, crepes, English muffins, hot cross buns, and her wonderfully gooey gingerbread. Chapters on fish, meats, salads, and soups with Mexican and European favorites are followed by simple home remedies like citrus-blossom tea for insomnia. What should you do with the huge mounds of seasonal fruit in the market? Look to Nothing Fancy for great recipes for jams and genuine Mexican recipes. And how to brew the perfect pot of English tea? There is a whole chapter devoted to the perfect cup of tea and all the delights to be served alongside! This is a cookbook of Diana’s life throughout the world with its heart located in her wonderful kitchen and garden in Michoacán, Mexico.
Kennedy has written eight classic books on the regional foods of Mexico, including the James Beard Cookbook of the Year Oaxaca al Gusto: An Infinite Gastronomy, The Essential Cuisines of Mexico, The Art of Mexican Cooking, and My Mexico.
Diana will be signing Nothing Fancy and all her cookbooks in English and Spanish at Camino Silvestre on September 30.
