Casita Linda Announces Advisory Board

By Louise Gilliam

Casita Linda has experienced exponential growth over the last few years. We will soon build our 100th house for the most impoverished families in San Miguel de Allende. We continually work to improve the structure of the houses we build. A few years ago, we also made the commitment to provide more than just houses. Now, with the help of other wonderful organizations in our community, we give each family mattresses and bedframes, beautiful warm blankets, solar lights, eco stoves, and basic furniture, thereby helping to make each new Casita Linda house a real home. The families we build for commit to contributing 75 hours of labor on their home, thus feeling a pride of ownership.

Our newest commitment as of 2016 is to help these families become as successful as possible, despite their extreme poverty. To this end, we’ve hired two extraordinary local women to provide two workshops a week for many months to the mothers of our Casita Linda families. The workshops cover topics including self-esteem, goal-setting, nutrition, organic gardening, personal hygiene, child-rearing, family communication, the importance of education for their children’s future, addiction, safe sex, domestic violence, and income-generating projects. These workshops are an exciting new step forward for Casita Linda. We are thrilled to be embarking on this journey of empowerment, personal growth, and community development for our families.

And now we are happy to call upon the expertise of prominent people in our community through our new Advisory Board, which will be instrumental in helping us to continue to grow and improve our services.
