Parker Quartet’s Generous Return to Music Festival
By Stanton Robert Gray
When Jeremy Denk had to cancel his two performances with Festival Internacional de Música because of a family medical emergency, Dirk Bakker, the artistic director of the Festival, immediately began his search for a world-class replacement.
There was an outpouring of support to find a replacement within 24 hours. The Parker Quartet, a Grammy-winning ensemble and enormous favorite of Festival audiences, was able to make adjustments to their professional and personal schedules to come to the aid of the San Miguel Festival. This is a great honor and an example of the esteem that the International Music Festival holds in the world of classical musicians.
The Parker Quartet has had a remarkable year, performing at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.
They return to San Miguel for performances on Friday, August 19, and Saturday, August 20, at 7pm in the Ángela Peralta Theater. The Friday concert will include Beethoven’s Quartet No. 2 in G major, Op.18 No. 2, Schulhoff’s Five Pieces, and the Ravel
Quartet. Saturday’s concert will include Bartok’s Quartet No. 1 and Schubert’s Quartet in G major, D. 887. These two concerts are an opportunity for the Parker Quartet and San Miguel audiences to share an experience of mutual respect and appreciation for the bond that has been established between them. All tickets for the Jeremy Denk concerts will be honored, and remaining tickets are available at Consejo Turístico in the Jardín, at the Ángela Peralta box office on performance days, and online at festivalsanmiguel.com, the Festival Internacional de Música website.
