Take a Chance on Me

From the SPA

By Joan DiPiero

We received e-mail from an adopter now living in California with her SPA cat. Patty says, “The one whom I adore is 4, and today is our birthday. She had tuna, and I had salmon. She had water, and I had wine. We are gloriously happy that you let her come live with me. We are the perfect couple!”

Three years ago Patty was a beloved volunteer who spent hours with our cats, and when it came time to choose one for herself, she didn’t want one of the beautiful ones, the playful ones, or the affectionate ones. Instead, her heart went out to a little tortoise scaredy-cat named Margarita, who spent most of her day out of sight, hidden in the back recesses of a basket. Patty believed that with enough attention and love she’d be able to bring this kitten out of her shell. Once home, Margarita took weeks just to stop running for cover when Patty entered the room. Over the next few months, with amazing patience, Patty watched her cat progress, taking baby steps, but sure and steady. Margarita will probably never be an exuberant cat, but Patty loves her for herself.

Most adopters want instant gratification when choosing cats, and who can blame them? What fun to have a playful, purring, lively, affectionate pet who responds immediately. However, some of our overlooked cats hope you will look past the flashy extroverts and see their value. Balki, a handsome one-year-old black male, was outgoing as a kitten, but now is reserved in front of newcomers. He will happily sit on the laps of those volunteers he knows, so we know his shyness will disappear when he goes to a loving home. Four-month-old Zorro is a gorgeous male kitten with long black and white fur. An absolute snuggle bunny, he is a little timid with newcomers, but we are sure he will thrive once he’s in his forever home. Orange and white Hermes and calico Harlequin are the shy siblings of their litter. Under three months old, they are sure to become braver with time and attention.

Are you willing to take a chance on one of our quiet ones? Meet them at the SPA, Los Pinos 7, 152 6124, Monday–Saturday, 11–2. Like Patty, the slower paced road to a lifelong loving relationship may reward you.
