Quest for the Lost Maya

By David Johanssen

The Mayas’ soaring pyramids, monumental cities, and mythical mastery of astronomy and mathematics have spurred generations of explorers into the jungles of Central America on a quest to understand them. In the past decade, researchers working in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula have made a series of startling discoveries that reveal a gaping hole in our understanding of the magnificence of the Maya. What we thought we knew about them could suddenly turn out to be just half the story.

Quest for the Lost Maya follows American archaeologists as they find startling evidence of a forgotten Mayan society in the Yucatan. Discussion of this lost civilization to follow. 50 pesos.

Rosa Guadalupe LIVE: Return to Latin Roots on July 29 at 7:30pm celebrates classic songs from across Latin America. In the late 1970s, Rosa was first introduced to Nuevo Canto and Trovo music, a movement that was sweeping Latin America with its poetic and passionate ballads. In her concert at Shelter, Rosa uses her sultry stage presence and alluring voice to share the essence of the Nuevo Canto style of musical Latin romance. Don’t miss this “noche de amor Latina”! Tickets available at the Biblioteca and online at 200 pesos.

Richard Dawkins: The God Delusion, Saturday, July 30, at 5pm. In this hard-hitting statement of personal belief, noted scientist and the world’s most prominent atheist asserts the irrationality of belief in God and the grievous harm religion has inflicted on society. With rigor and wit, Dawkins examines God in all his forms, from the “tyrant” of the Old Testament to the more benign (but still illogical) Celestial Watchmaker favored by some Enlightenment thinkers. Lively discussion to follow! 50 pesos.

Zero Days exposes the looming threat of the digital age. Friday, August 5, at 5pm, the feature-length documentary thriller is about the world of cyber-warfare. This film tells the story of Stuxnet and other self-replicating, intentionally destructive software that spun out of its creators’ control. After this cautionary tale of opening the Pandora’s Box of cyber-warfare, you’ll wonder if the Terminator’s “Skynet” is already here! 100 pesos (includes drink). Discussion to follow.

Shelter Theater is part of the Shelter VG4 Cultural Center, located at Vicente Guerrero 4, a short walk from the Jardín down Insurgentes. Telephone 154 7524 or visit to see upcoming events. Shelter VG4’s theater and class/performance space are available for rent.
