“We all love stories,” commented former festival director CheriRae Wright. “They are the earliest and most universal of art forms. Everyone has a story, and a person who has never told a tale in public has the opportunity to win a prize at the competition. I urge everyone who thinks he has a story to tell to sign up to audition for this year’s event.”
The 2016 San Miguel Storytelling competition will run from October 13 to 14, with a showcase and awards night on October 15. All events will be held at Bellas Artes, Hernández Macías 75. This year there will be both Spanish and English stories in the competition.
What is required of a festival story? It’s simple. We want a true story about you from your life that takes no longer than seven minutes to tell. Adult content in good taste is preferred and you may use props as needed. Props should be used sparingly, however, because while a prop may enhance your story, if badly used or unnecessary, it will count against the person in competition. Cash prizes will be awarded.
“Remember that a great story doesn’t have to be about cataclysmic events,” adds CheriRae. “Audiences in 2015 totally connected to a story about finding the pennies to buy candy as a child, or the cultural surprises of a ten-year-old boy on his first visit to the United States. Good stories are usually about events, big or small, that change your perception of the world and of yourself.”
