You Can Make a Difference to a Child, a Family, a Community

By Donna Fullerton

For too many children in San Miguel de Allende, “back to school” doesn’t mean the excitement of new clothes, shoes, pencils, or books—it may mean that they can simply look forward to a break from hunger.

Feed the Hungry San Miguel has just launched its annual Back to School fundraising campaign. It relies almost entirely on private donations to deliver balanced meals, nutrition education, and community development programs in economically disadvantaged communities.

Feed the Hungry San Miguel currently provides roughly 4,000 meals every single school day. For many of the students, this school lunch is their only meal of the day. And thousands more are in need. For a child, nutrition is a crucial first step to a productive future. And because they are required to attend school to receive the meal, they also receive an education.

Since 1984, this organization has been helping to fill a gap in Mexican social services. They furnish kitchens attached to primary schools, hire and train cooks from the local communities to operate them, and deliver healthy, seasonal foodstuffs to 28 rural schools and six charities on a weekly basis. This is all made possible by your generous donations, a corps of dedicated volunteers, and the professional leadership of the organization’s board of trustees and advisory board.

When the children return to school in August, please help ensure that Feed the Hungry San Miguel can continue to provide nutritious school meals to the poorest of the poor and break the cycle of poverty through educated children. Even a small donation will go a long way.

Your donations also support daily meals for 500 orphans, children with disabilities, and elderly who are served by local urban charities. Donations are tax-deductible. To learn more, please visit feedthehungrysma.org.
